SIERRA 4.0 is a comprehensive flight-planning and real-time navigation program, which makes full 
use of the Series 3,3a superb graphics by using pull-down menus, dialogs and bitmaps (RNAV/GPS 
display)
It is supplied on SSD disk with full instructions, technical support and optional database updating 
service. There is a main menu from which all the options are chosen.
 There are Three possible ways to flight-plan:
1. Enter track,distance & variation.
2. Enter lat/long co-ordinates & variation (N or S Hemisphere & across Int dateline)
    or more likely,
 3. Enter a name or ident from the database (usually the first four letters of a name are enough), or just 
use the ICAO code.
The Track and distance is calculated.  All 3 methods can be combined while building a plan

Now Enter TAS/RAS or Mach no., Altitude or FL, fuel flow( lbs,kg,ltrs,impgall or usgall),
wind velocity and outside air temp (or use default values)......to show Trk, distance,TAS/RAS/Mach, 
Groundspeed, time, leg fuel and Hdg(m).
This data is recalled for subsequent legs or can be edited for each leg.    
The maximum no. of legs is 25 per plan
There is a Facility to plan an Alternate destination. The database has aprox 1700 airfields and 
navaids, which can easily be edited or added to, and covers:
U.K.,Ireland,Channel Islands, Belgium, Holland, France, Germany, Luxembourg, Switzerland
The database can be copied to another disk and edited to suit exact user requirements, whilst 
maintaining the original.

A completed plan can be stored on another disk or Internal memory, and then recalled for future use. 
The number stored is only limited by memory available.
A plan can be reversed for quick calculation of the return journey.
A  plan can be viewed in Row form 15 at a time...( with Series3 version)....or individually...
Total Distance and time is displayed after last leg. There is a comprehensive Edit facility to Change, 
Insert or delete Legs from your current Plan.
There is a New wind facility that quickly re-calculates the plan using a new wind velocity.
The Fuel facility displays quantity required (lbs,kg,ltr,impgall,usgall) for planned route, alternate, 
holding,  contingency, Total and Endurance. 
Weight and Balance:
 Details can be stored of any number of aircraft (Internal memory or another disk), and recalled by 
entering the registration, for rapid W&B calculations.Extra stations are available for forward 
baggage/extra seats etc.
There is automatic conversion if fuel weight units and previously stored W&B schedule units do not 
agree.
The weight, moment and centre of gravity is shown for take off and, based on the planned flight, for 
landing. Imperial or Metric units can be used.
Printout:
 By connecting a parallel/serial printer to the Series 3/3a , a kneeboard size printout (A5) of the plan 
is obtainable, including frequencies ,fuel and wt & bal. details. 
You can also Print to any Printer connected to your PC by using MCPRINT software.

RNAV:
 This is a powerful SIERRA 4.0 sub-program which converts the waypoints of the plan into RNAV 
co-ordinates and when VOR/DME, VOR/VOR or VOR/NDB fixes are entered, gives real-time 
navigation information.
This effectively moves any VOR/DME to the position of your planned w/pts so you can fly direct to 
them as if you are flying direct to the VOR/DME
 Simply select the waypoint number, enter the fix and the screen display gives the following 
information:




*No. & Name of w/pt, VOR and frequency check.
*CDI display with To/From flag showing off track error (sensitivity is  adjustable so that each                
dot can  represent 1nm or .25nm)
*OBS (automatically set to Trk(m) to w/pt but can be readily adjusted.)
*Hdg(m) to maintain a centred needle ( planned Trk(m) )
*Range to w/pt
*Groundspeed (initially based on w/vel, but then on actual time  measured  between fixes)
*ETE (elapsed time to w/pt)
*ETA to wpt
*A real time clock is also displayed and lat/long position at time of fix
A visual/aural morse ident check for the Navaid is available. If chosen VOR proves unreliable a new 
VOR can be selected and a new co-ordinate instantly obtained. 

The other utilities of SIERRA 4.0 are as follows:
Search:
 Lists all navaids  and their frequencies within a specific range of an airfield or navaid.
Fix/divert:
 Gives  lat/long position and RNAV co-ordinate from a VOR/DME, VOR/VOR or VOR/NDB fix. 
From this position the QDM and distance to the nearest or a specified Airfield is given, with 
frequencies. By  optionally entering TAS, wind vel etc., Hdg(m) & time to the diversion is given. 
Hold:
 Gives inbound Hdg and outbound Hdg & time for a standard 4 min holding pattern, from TAS, w/v 
and inbound track input. 
Conversions:
 Simultaneous conversions including volume, distance, speed, temperature, pressure, weight and 
volume to wt -wt to volume.
Morse:
 Visual and aural morse code generator from single letter or Navaid ident input.
X/wind:
 Calculates crosswind and headwind components  from R/wy hdg & w/v input.
Stopwatch:
 Stopwatch featuring One button push, to zero and restart.
Frequency:
 Finds the frequencies of any airfield/navaid held in database
Cost calculator:
 Calculates cost of current plan from running cost per nautical mile or cost per hour
Sunrise/Sunset times:
 Calculates worldwide Sunrise,Sunset,Civil dawn and Civil dusk times from airfield name input or 
Lat/Lon input.
Pressure/Density Altitude:
 Calculates Pressure altitude from QNH and altitude input and density altitude from OAT input

Additional Option\Upgrade for SIERRA  Flight-Planning software(S3 & S3a) 
GPS link with Trimble Flitemate Pro...Garmin 55/95/100/150...or any  NMEA 0183 compatible GPS.
                                                   
This new option/upgrade offers a continuously updated CDI or Moving-Map display for  navigation of 
your planned route. The GPS unit Connects via the PSION 3-link RS232 interface.

The CDI display shows:  Waypoint number and name, Hdg(m) to maintain track, Range to wpt(nm), 
Groundspeed(kts), Actual track(m), OBS (automatically set to required trk(m) but can be adjusted to 
any Trk(m) ), CDI display with adjustable sensitivity (1nm/.25nm  ENR/APP ), UTC time from 
satellite, ETE (time enroute), ETA and Lat/Long position.  
As you pass each waypoint the next is automatically selected (or can be selected manually).
Go To button for instant navigation to a diversion/new wpt., with option to resume planned route


The Moving-Map shows:   The planned route, airfields/navaids/user defined waypoints enroute, and 
the aircraft position as depicted by a flashing cursor.
The right hand side of the screen displays: 
Waypoint number and name, Trk(m), Cross Trk error (nm L/R),  Groundspeed(kts),  QDM direct to 
wpt, Range to wpt(nm), UTC time, ETE, ETA and Lat/Long position. (N.B. S3 version displays less 
data)
As you pass each waypoint the next is automatically selected (or can be selected manually).
'Go To' button for instant navigation to a diversion/new wpt., with option to resume planned route. 
Zoom button to adjust scale of map. Distance scale (nm) at base of map(not S3 ver). 
At the press of a key  the full names of airfields are displayed. Mini CDI display(not S3 ver.).
The Map covers the entire database plus any edits or additions.
